Oregano – Origanum vulgare

Oregano is a culinary herb, used for the flavour of its leaves, which can be more intense when dried than fresh. It has an earthy, warm, and slightly bitter taste, which can vary in intensity.

Origin

Oregano originated in southern Europe and subsequently spread to Scandinavia as well as Central and North America. This herb has thick roots and pinkish-violet flowers that appear in umbrels. A powerful scent is released when you crush the leaves.

Use In Cuisine

This classic pizza herb, with it’s bitter aromatic taste, is also good in soups, meats and pasta. It is mixed with other herbs to produce the famous blend ‘Herbes de Provence’.

Other Uses

The essential oil that oregano contains is used in many cosmetic products.

Health Use

The bitter substances affect gall-bladder function. Tea made from 1 spoonful of the herb steeped in 1 cup boiling water soothes stomach and intenstinal probelsm such as diarrhea. Oregano tea can relieve a troublesome cough if you add honey.

Special Tip – Quick Tomato Soup

Sautee 1 small onion and 1 pressed garlic clove in a little butter and add half a cup of vegetable broth, together with 4 peeled tomatoes, 1 tsp of oregano and crushed thyme to taste. Cook for 10 minutes, and just before serving pour cream on top and add salt. Add some basil leaves to garnish the soup.
