Italian Sausage Skillet is a delicious recipe that includes Italian Sausage, tomatoes, onions and mushrooms. The addition of sugar takes the dish to another level. I enjoy having this over white rice.

Italian Sausage Skillet

Ingredients

  • 5 Italian Sausages, Casings Removed
  • 1 cup Onion, Chopped
  • 1 tbsp Garlic, Minced
  • 1 cup White or Cremini Mushrooms, Sliced
  • 1 – 28 oz Can Diced Tomatoes with Juice
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • Salt & Pepper To Taste
  • Fresh Parmesan cheese, Finely Grated
  • Chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 – 2 tbsp Tomato Paste

How to Make Italian Sausage Skillet

  • Scramble fry sausage, onion and garlic in a large skillet over medium-high heat for approximately 8 minutes, stirring constantly until sausage is browned. Drain off excess grease.
  • Add mushrooms, reduce heat to medium and cook for approximately 3 minutes until browned.
  • Add next 4 ingredients, stir and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer covered for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally until tomato breaks down.
  • Add tomato paste to thicken, more or less depending on what consistency you prefer.
  • Remove from heat to a serving platter and sprinkle with Parmesan Cheese and Parsley

NOTES

Use whatever type of Italian Sausage you prefer, hot, medium, mild. I prefer to use Italian Sausage with Basil.  It adds a nice mild flavor to the sauce.

I prefer to serve Italian Sausage Skillet over white rice, however I’m sure over pasta would be quite nummy as well.

Making ahead

This is a fairly simple recipe that really doesn’t require a lot of maintenance during the cooking process so I really haven’t found the need to make ahead. However if you are short on time to get it to the table, you could certainly precook the sausage meat to help. You could also make the entire recipe earlier in the day or even the day before and heat it over the stove to warm it right through. You could use a microwave as an alternative however I found food warmed in a microwave does not retain it’s heat as long.

Leftovers

Any leftovers I put in a covered container and store in the fridge for several days. I do tend to eat the leftovers for lunch the next day so no need to freeze. However you can freeze leftover Italian Sausage Skillet for several months. Place in a freezer bag and lay flat to save on space. Reheating once thawed, I would on the Stove with the microwave as an option.
