Tender green beans in a creamy sour cream based sauce, mixed with cheddar cheese and topped with French Fried Onions. A delicious side dish for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
There are many variations of this receipe, with the most common is the use of cream of mushroom soup. With this version, the use of Montreal Steak spice mixes well with the sour cream and adds a great flavour profile.
The Green Bean Casserole recipe was created in 1955 by Dorcas Reilly at the Campbell Soup Company and has grown to become a standard on the Holiday table.

This variation was shared with me by a co-worker whose Mother has been making it at as a Christmas Side Dish his entire life. I was introduced to the dish during a Pot Luck lunch at the office and despite my extreme dislike for green beans he convinced me to try it. Much to my surprise I did rather enjoy the bite that I had and have since added this dish to my holiday dinners.
Ingredients
This receipe in it’s current form uses canned green beans, but fresh can be used instead and it does add more flavour I find and added freshness.
A standard can of green beans weighs 14 fluid ounces, so if you decide to to use fresh, I would pick up around 2 lbs. An then of course fresh green beans are not always readily available so use the canned instead. It will still be a delicious and flavourful dish.
French fried onions can be sometimes tricky to source. I do find not all of my local grocery Stores carry this product but a few do so it might require a bit of Store hopping to find these. There are also a number of different brands on the market these days and I recently found a version called Garlic Pepper Crispy Onions. Not exactly the same as French Fried but darn near and this would bring another different flavour to your dish.
The rest of the ingredients are pretty common place and should not pose any issues in locating them.
Prepping and Making Ahead
A great feature of the Green Bean Casserole is the make ahead value. When creating a Holiday Dinner, having a number of dishes that can be prepared up to the final stage of baking is so valuable and will help make the day of go much more smooth. Prepare all of the steps, then cover and refrigerate until the next day. I like to take my prepped casserole dishes out of the fridge an hour or two prior to baking to allow the dish to warm somethwhat prior to popping in the oven.
Leftover Green Bean Casserole are great as leftovers as well. The dish reheats quite nicely in the oven. I will add a bit of water to ensure it does not dry out and place it in a 350 degree oven for approximately 30 minutes or until it is bubly and heated through.
