Sausage Stars are a delicious appetizer made of sausage, hidden valley ranch dressing, cheddar cheese & black olives inside a toasted wonton cup.

Ingredients

These ingredients should be readily available in most Supermarkets. You may have issues finding wonton wrappers in which case you can go to an Asian grocery store.
- 24 wonton wrappers
- 2 packages of sausage
- 4 cups of old shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 envelope of hidden valley ranch dressing
- 1 small can of chopped black olives
How to Make It
Lightly oil muffin tins and place a wonton wrapper in each cup. Bake for 5 minutes in a 350 degree oven. Remove from muffin tin and let cool on a wire rack.
Cook sausage meat in a frying pan on medium heat crumbling until cooked through approximately 20 minutes. Drain grease and put in a mixing bowl. Stir in cheese, envelope of ranch dressing, olives and garlic until we’ll combined.
Place filling in wonton shells on a baking sheet and bake in 350 degree oven until cheese is melted approximately 6 – 8 minutes.
Making Ahead
Prepping Sausage Stars ahead of time will save you time on the day of your event or you can make them any time and store them in the freezer to finish off when unexpected company arrives.
Making ahead, I will cook the sausage, mix with the garlic, ranch dressing, cheese & olives, place in a fridge or freezer baggie and refrigerate or freeze depending on how soon I plan on making them. Separately, I will make the wonton cups and stack them carefully in a fridge or freezer safe container & place in the fridge or freezer.
If I plan on using them within a couple of days I will keep them in the fridge, any longer than that and I will tuck them away in the freezer.
Tips for making Sausage Stars
- Prevent soggy wrappers. To ensure a crispy base, pre-bake the empty wonton wrappers in the mini muffin tin for about 5 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Remove them from the oven before adding the filling.
- Drain the sausage well. After cooking the ground sausage, make sure to drain all excess grease completely. A wet, greasy filling will make the wonton wrappers soggy.
- Chill the filling. Let the cooked and drained sausage cool before mixing it with the ranch dressing and cheese. Chilling the filling in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes can also help it set, making it easier to spoon into the delicate wonton cups.
- Protect extra wrappers. Wonton wrappers dry out quickly. Keep any unused wrappers covered with a damp paper towel while you work.
- Adjust the filling. You can make the filling less rich by using a flavored yogurt or light sour cream instead of ranch dressing. If your mixture seems too soupy, add a little more cheese to thicken it.
